Sunn
Sunn, the sarcastic Mistaknowitall: a lyricist born and honed in the industrial sprawl of Chicago's Sounthside. The hard reality of his inner city neighborhood contrasted harshly with the affluent private schools his mother struggled to keep him in. The diversity spawned a unique style of sonic conception, elaborate, vertically referenced; encompassing pure battle rage, introspective stabs, and dark fantastically descriptive storytelling. Exposed to hip-hop at the age of four by constant repeats of "Rappers Delight" on his cousin's record player, Sunn was hooked for good. What followed was a period of intense study; first recording and transcribing the lyrics to every rap record played on the radio, later progressing to diligently memorizing the rhyme schemes and vocal patterns of the masters. By high school the young Sunn was already a prolific beat boxer, holding his ground at local freestyle sessions. The Chicago underground is labyrinthian, and Sunn has earned his place in its complex and secretive history. His earliest recordings were with the Southside trio "The Misfits"; battle rhymes with a gangster influence. Acquiring the moniker Blak Sunn tha Hulk Incredible, Sunn moved on to form the more abstract "DungeonMastaz" with M.C. Ayre. Together they recorded another super underground release, one in which Sunn began to find his own distinctive voice, gritty and fantastic but still with a battle edge. The group was then reformed to record an EP with the Alchemist from "The Misfits" and Psychosis the Man Spider Spectacular. Constantly honing his skills and expanding his musical conceptions, Sunn then hooked up with fellow emcees Smoking Joe and Wick the Walking Charles Xavier and a large community of producers, jazz musicians, and turntablists performing under the name "Dolce Stil Nuovo". Sunn recorded the album Infrastructure with Dolce and released it on the fledging label Audio 8 Recordings, which evolved out of the extended Dolce family. Now busy as a part owner of the label, he has just released the full length album "Prostitute Karaoke" with Polyphonic, Flesh O.N.E., and A.M.Overtone. :: A8 Releases A8001/CD Dolce Stil Nuovo Infrastructure A8009/12" EP Sunn / Polyphonic / Flesh O.N.E. / AM Overtone Prostitute Karaoke Vol 1 A8018 Sunn / Polyphonic / Flesh O.N.E. / AM Overtone Prostitute Karaoke Full Length |
