“Dennehy”, the title track off Serengeti’s new album will be
featured in the opening scene of the movie Riff Raff,
starring Rob Belushi, son of Jim, nephew of John. The owner of
Serengeti’s previous label, St. Louis’s F5 Records, went to school
with Belushi and introduced him to the rapper. Belushi was so
impressed with Serengeti’s music that he decided that it should be
part of the film’s soundtrack.
Chicago label Audio8 Recordings will be releasing Serengeti’s new
album Noticeably Negro. The Midas Wells-produced album
features appearances by MF Grimm, who Serengeti also worked with on
Dennehy, as well as Chicago hip hop staples Juice and Dirty
Heat. Noticeably Negro also features the rap stylings of
Hi-Fidel, the alter ego of L.A. artist Fro Hawk Two-Feathers, who is
also credited for the album’s artwork.
In addition to Noticeably Negro, which will be released
this month, Audio8 will also be releasing a collaborative album by
Serengeti and producer Polyphonic The Verbose in January. Don’t
Give Up will be an entirely electronic album featuring Serengeti
on vocals, with Polyphonic acting as beat-master.
As if that isn’t enough, Serengeti (aka David Cohn) also fronts a
full band, which coincidentally goes by the name of The Serengeti.
The group is a four piece with Serengeti handling vocals, Tommy
Grant managing the keyboard and guitar, Raef Godfrey manning the
drums, and Pablo handling the bass. Bonafyde Recordings, which
released Dennehy, is putting out the band’s debut effort,
Marry Your Affair, which boasts 11 fresh tracks. Cohn tells
us, “The album ranges from simple pop shit to longer, more complex
material.” Marry Your Affair will hit shelves sometime this
winter.
In the meantime, Serengeti fans can look forward to videos for
the songs “I Don’t Know” (Dennehy), “Margot” (Gasoline
Rainbows), and “What If” from the forthcoming Marry Your
Affair.
