Serengeti & Polyphonic - Don’t Give Up
- Serengeti & Polyphonic’s
“Don’t Give Up” is a tried and true electronica album. The
deep voiced vocalist brings a sexiness to each song along with
the futuristic rhythms that will entice listeners.
The
first track has electronic keyboard work that has continual
lapses throughout. but the pace of the song is calming with
the addition of what could be nature sounds that are slightly
revamped by a synthesizer. This combination could give the
impression of floating through space aimlessly.
The
second track has pounding drum beats in the introduction
accompanied by metrical guitar. The message of this song might
confound listeners because in one part, the vocalist muses
about the bliss of love, and then on the next line, he talks
about how he has been scorned and uses several profane words
to get his point across. Examples of this include, “Love, all
of this love. All of this love…Passions and feelings of joy.
Wonderful joy. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, yeah. So the
last relationship fu**ed me up, you treated me good…Not a good
way to get a grip on stuff. Living in our mind that shit is
rough…For the infinite time I see the same s**t again.” Is the
vocalist praising the institution of love or is he condemning
it? The true meaning of this song is blurred and that might
perturb some listeners.
The third track has
expeditious keyboard work that is denotative of true
electronica music. The keyboard is tapped ever so effortlessly
for a quick rhythm. Nature sounds are again heard in the
background and echoes with help from a synthesizer. There is
also clapping sprinkled throughout that might get listeners
vexed.
The fourth track is radically different than
the previous tracks. It has acoustic guitar and could be a
song featured on MTV’s “Unplugged,” with its seamless
transitions from note to note. It also has percussion work
that gives it a tropical island vibe. The vocalist croons
about giving all of himself to his baby and how his sacrifice
doesn’t seem to be appreciated with lyrics like, “Tied myself
inside out to please you….I never really tried that hard…I
never thought this day would come.” It seems the vocalist was
blindsided by this woman he thought he could trust, but he has
since learned to guard against such manipulations.
Serengeti & Polyphonic’s “Don’t Give Up” doesn’t
give an inch, with electronic sounds that will pulse through
listeners’ bodies. Though some of the tracks have contrasting
lyrics, the infectious beat of the music might trounce over
that and make listeners just get up and dance.
