About a year ago a friend gave me a
CD he'd been sent for free at the radio station called Juba Dance by this guy
who splits his time between Chicago's southside and Brazil. He'd never listened
to it. I'd never heard of it and since I have an unhealthy dependence on getting
referred to what's cool, I downloaded and, after listening to an interesting
track or two, forgot it for quite some time.
On a whim, I recently
started playing it. I now can't stop. It' a cross between southside hip hop (is
there something called southside hip hop; I don't know) and a Rio street fair.
It's upbeat, full of awesome instrumentation and samples, including really great
horns, and the ryhthms intoxicate. This is a link to his myspace. Look up his
album Orange on Itunes and sample Fisherman's Jig.
