I hope you are all
not still hungover. Being of legitimate Irish heritage
(father's side, came over to Newfoundland about 300
years ago, found they couldn't grow anything but
potatoes there either), I completely ignored St.
Patrick's Day. Dan claims I wore green, but he is colour
blind; it was blue.
1.
Juba Dance - Tomorrow
This song from Juba Dance
sounds like a party. It also sounds like summer, which
it unfortunately does not feel like outside. I'll
sit in here and feel summery listening to it anyway, all
horns and fun noises in the background and grooviness.
It would make good food for my iPod, but the contrast
between it and the actual outdoors might be kind of
depressing between now and, say,
July.
2.
Silverchair - Straight Lines
We were talking about Silverchair
just the other night, and lo, now they resurface here.
Dan just asked me if I think anyone will care, and I
said I didn't know; they've been gone a long time, they
were never critical darlings and today's teenagers don't
remember when they were popular (ooooolllddd). They seem
to have moved away from the grunge sound, anyway, with
piano and singing instead of screaming. It's actually
got a little bit of an 80s sound, if you can imagine
that. It's not bad, actually. The chorus is pretty
catchy.
3. Menomena
- Wet & Rusty
Menomena
sound a bit like an indier version of that Silverchair
song; I think it's the piano. I like piano, so I'm okay
with it. It starts off a bit...well, not strange, but
it's not the kind of song that's instantly going to grab
you when you hear it in your car radio. Because it
wouldn't get a lot of radio play, probably. But that is
not a strike against it, as I like it more the longer it
runs.
Menomena is playing El Mocambo in Toronto on Friday,
for those who may be interested.
4. Kings Of Leon - On
Call
Oh, new Kings Of
Leon! I like Kings Of Leon. I am a bit of a sucker
for anyone who has a classic rock thing going on. This
is actually something of a departure for them -- less
mumbly vocals, not as obvious about the 70s influences.
It's still got that swagger that I like about the band
in the first place though, and there's a guitar line
about mid-song that's pretty
awesome.
5. Feist -
My Moon My Man
Feist is playing
at Massey Hall this spring. Maybe I will go see her;
we'll see what I think of the venue after seeing the
Rheos there at the end of this month. All that is to say
that I like Feist, and I look forward to her new album.
This song bodes well for it, I think, with its piano (a
theme this week?) and the sultry chorus. It might get
stuck in your head, so consider that a fair
warning.
6. The
Zincs - Coward's Corral
The Zincs are
doing some of the retro thing that Kings Of Leon have
left behind a bit. The vocalist has an appealing
snottiness in his heavily-accented singing. I like the
track, but I want to hear more because I feel like
unless they vary the sound a bit, it could get a bit
repetitive over the course of an
album.
7. The One
AM Radio - In The Time We've Got
And now we have something a bit prettier to
wind the list down. This song from The One AM
Radio does kind of sound like something you might
listen to late at night when you're feeling a bit sad,
or sleepy. I really like the vocals, in
particular.
8.
Spiral Beach - Voodoo
This sounds like kind of a mash-up an 80s
song and one of those strange tracks from the 50s with
an "island" sound to it. Spiral
Beach have a pretty great female vocalist, and it's
rather satisfying to join in with her on the chorus.
They smartly keep the song short, but it's got some
shifts even in three and a half minutes. I'll have to
listen to more from them.

|
WINNER: It seems kind of obvious, but I'll
probably have that Feist song in my head for days.
I like all of this list though, and there were
several tracks that provided good competition for
her. Not a runaway victory. |

|
LOSER: The Zincs was the only song where I
was grabbed less immediately, but that's not to
say it's bad. I kind of hate picking a loser on
weeks like this, where every song had something
positive about it.
