The Flesh O.N.E. MIDI Modification will turn your mixer into a performance-ready MIDI control device. Unlike other MIDI-capable DJ mixers, the Flesh MIDI Mod is designed to be used while scratching, opening the doors to previously unexplored areas of live turntablism. It is a powerful tool allowing the user to trigger both samples and loops from any standard MIDI software or hardware while scratching.

The Flesh MIDI mod transmits standard MIDI notes from a 5-pin din MIDI connector installed on the back of your mixer. These notes can be triggered from the crossfader to allow maximum freedom while scratching. The note can be changed via a rotary knob on the faceplate of the mixer.

The Flesh MIDI Mod allows the user to scratch uninterrupted while simultaneously triggering loops, dropping in samples, and performing other real-time audio events. Here are some simple practice applications:

Triggering different loops while scratching using Abletone Live:

For scratch practice, try loading 12 different style beat loops into Live. Load all of the loops into the first column. Assign a different MIDI note from the Flesh MIDI Mod to each of the loops. This can be done quickly and easily by clicking on the MIDI button at the top right. Click on the first loop at the top of the column. Move your fader over. Note C3 will be displayed in the box. Push the down arrow key on your computer keyboard and turn the rotary knob of the Flesh MIDI mod to position 2. move the fader again. Note C#3 will be displayed in the second box. Continue to assign all of the loops. Practice cutting over the first loop until you get bored. Then turn the Flesh MIDI rotary knob to the next position and trigger the next loop. Continue practicing over the next loop. This is a very simple application that allows you to cut over the same loop for hours until you are bored. You never have to stop cutting to move the needle back to the beginning of the beat. You can instantly load the next loop without ever getting out of position or stopping the record you are scratching with.

Triggering one-shot samples while scratching using Ableton Live:

To make real time beats, try scratching a bass kick and a snare with one record. Load several one shot sounds into Live. While drumming, trigger the one shot samples with the Flesh MIDI Mod. Try assigning a big bass sound to the first position of the rotary switch, and assign the same big bass sound added to a short melody sample to the second rotary position. Only trigger the sample assigned to the first rotary position for the first four bars of drumming, and then scratch a simple drum break, pause, and then start drumming again while triggering the sample assigned to the second rotary position. Since you are triggering the samples realtime, you are not limited to a specific tempo or time signiture while drumming.

Recording while scratching using Sound Forge:

Assign the first rotary position of the Flesh MIDI Mod to the Record Start/Stop button. This setting is found in the options tab under MIDI triggers. Highlight the Record start/stop event, and check the box labeled note and the box labeled Enable MIDI Input sync/trigger. Move your fader over and the MIDI note will be displayed. Click on Save as and Save this setting so you don't have to assign it every time. Click Ok to close the MIDI trigger window. Click on the record button in Sound Forge to open the record window. Choose "create a new window for each take" in the Mode pull down menu. Now, when you move your fader over, sound forge instantly start recording. When you move your fader over a second time recording will stop. When you move your fader over a third time, sound forge will start recording instantly in a new window. This allows for recording multiple takes without having to reset your hands or stop your record.

Playing a synthesizer or other keyboard while scratching:

The first rotary position of the Flesh MIDI Mod transmits middle C on a keyboard. Try sending the line out of your keyboard to the line in of your scratch mixer. Trigger the synthesizer with the Flesh MIDI Mod and then cut the sounds with your up fader or crossfader. Have a friend tweak the knobs on the synth while you cut and trigger the sounds. Have a third person drum. This allows for some unexpected and funky synth melodies.

Complete installation instuctions with photos are available upon purchase along with email-based technical support.
